Science

General

Description: Typically a 7th or 8th grade course, general science begins with a brief history of the study of science. Topics will include the key components of the scientific method including how to analyze and interpret data and write a simple lab report. Applied science and technology as well as archeology, paleontology and geology will be explored. Students will also cover topics such as scientific classification, the structure of life including DNA, life’s energy cycle and human anatomy (digestive, respiratory, circulatory, lymphatic, endocrine, urinary, and nervous systems). Hands-on experiments are an integral part of this class. Numerous in- class labs and investigations provide opportunities to develop laboratory skills such as lab report writing along with careful observation and interpretation of lab data. Opportunities for peer discussion of class topics are provided as well as interactive small group activities including presentations of experiments by students.
Tutor: Debbie Stenzel

Physical Science

Description: Typically a 9th grade course, physical science begins with the study of basic chemistry (atoms, molecules, elements, organic chemistry, biochemistry). Students will also cover topics such as geology (rocks, earth's structure, earthquakes and volcanoes), the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, weather, the structure of the earth, environmentalism, and astrophysics (a brief look at the solar system), as well as basic physics (forces, sound, light, magnetism, electricity) and the physics of motion, gravity, and Newton’s Laws. It is an excellent course for preparing the student for a college-prep high school science class. Hands-on experiments are an integral part of this class. Numerous in-class labs and investigations provide opportunities to develop laboratory skills such as lab report writing along with careful observation and interpretation of lab data. Additionally review games and activities are incorporated to reinforce class concepts. Opportunities for peer discussion of class topics are provided as well as interactive small group activities.

Biology

Description: This course is designed to be the student’s first high school science course and is a college-prep biology course that provides a detailed introduction to the methods and concepts of general biology. Heavily emphasizing the vocabulary of biology, it provides the student with a strong background in the scientific method, the five-kingdom classification scheme, microscopy, biochemistry, cellular biology, molecular and Mendelian genetics, evolution, dissection, and ecosystems. It also provides a complete survey of the five kingdoms in Creation. Students who take and understand this course will be very well-prepared for a tough university biology course. Suggestions to prepare students to take the College Biology CLEP for 6 college credits will be offered to interested students. This is an excellent way for students to avoid the evolutionary and liberal bias of most college biology classes.

*This course earns one high school credit and is college prep level. Students will be provided with the opportunity to participate in Honors level work if desired. With some additional prep, students may be able to take the College Biology CLEP for 6 college credits. Study tips for those interested in this option will be provided.
